What REALTORS® Should Know From TREC’s August Meeting
The Texas Real Estate Commission met August 10, with several updates that could affect brokers, license holders and real estate education in Texas.
From expanded Broker Responsibility Course requirements to changes in education reporting, here are the highlights REALTORS® should know.
Broker Responsibility Course Requirements Are Expanding
TREC approved the 2027-2028 Broker Responsibility Course, which focuses on broker supervision and responsibility.
The updated requirements expand who must take the course. All broker applicants and renewing brokers must complete it, whether or not they plan to sponsor a sales agent. Delegated supervisors must also complete the course.
That means the requirement will apply more broadly to Texas brokers during the 2027-2028 course cycle.
TREC has also opened registration for Broker Responsibility Course instructor training.
Education Reporting Is Moving Toward Automation
TREC adopted changes to several education rules as part of its transition to the Real Estate and Appraiser License Management (REALM) Portal.
Starting October 1, 2026, education providers must include a student’s license number or application number when they submit qualifying real estate course completion records.
This information will allow REALM to process more education records automatically. Previously, students submitted certificates and TREC staff manually reviewed and entered the information.
You may also notice a terminology change. TREC will now call “course completion certificates” “course completion records.”
Inspector Standards Changes Are on Hold
The Texas Real Estate Inspector Committee had been considering updates to its Standards of Practice and report forms.
For now, the committee has withdrawn those proposed changes. It will review recommendations from the Texas Regulatory Efficiency Office before considering additional revisions.
Broker Responsibility Advisory Committee Membership Is Changing
TREC also changed the makeup of the Broker Responsibility Advisory Committee.
Under the new structure, two public members will take the place of two broker members. The change helps balance representation between the real estate industry and consumers, as required by state law.
What to Watch Next
For brokers, the expanded Broker Responsibility Course requirement is the biggest change to keep on the radar as the 2027-2028 course cycle approaches.
For license holders completing qualifying education, the October 1 reporting change should streamline how course completion information moves through TREC’s REALM Portal.
