Digital Safety Reminders for Today’s REALTOR®

Staying secure online is part of doing business well. As technology evolves, so do the tactics used by bad actors. A few consistent habits can go a long way in protecting your business, your clients, and your reputation.

Here are some general best practices intended to help members reduce risk in their day-to-day activities:

Pause before you click
Be cautious with unsolicited links sent via text message, email, or messaging apps, especially from unknown or unexpected contacts.

Be selective with downloads and updates
Avoid installing software or clicking “update” prompts to join a meeting you did not schedule.

Confirm new contacts
Before meeting virtually with someone new, consider verifying their identity by requesting a brief phone call or by scheduling the meeting yourself and sending your own link.

Watch for urgency
Be wary of pressure to act quickly, particularly when requests involve links, downloads, or transaction-related information. Urgency is often used to bypass good judgment.

Slow it down
If something feels unusual or out of character, pause and independently confirm the request, even if it appears legitimate at first glance.

Not sure about a link? Check it safely.
You may choose to  review a link without clicking by using reputable third-party link-scanning tools, such as:

Use your REALTOR® tools
Members may also consider using Forewarn and TetherRE (available through MetroTex member benefits) to verify phone numbers that initiate calls or text messages before engaging further. These services are independent third-party platforms and are not operated or controlled by MetroTex.
