Verify the Seller Before You Take the Listing

Ownership Verification is now available through MetroTex MLS, giving subscribers a way to check seller identity and property ownership before taking the listing.

A prospective seller can sound convincing, but that does not always mean they own the property. When seller impersonation slips through, agents and brokers can lose valuable time and resources before discovering that a listing is fraudulent.

Powered by Property Shield, Ownership Verification helps confirm a prospective seller’s identity and compare it with owner-of-record information. Once the seller completes a secure identity check, you receive a risk report with any potential flags to help you decide how to proceed.

How Ownership Verification Works

Ownership Verification adds a simple check before you take the listing:

  1. Place the order. Enter the seller’s name, email address and property address.
  2. Verify the seller. The seller receives a secure link to complete an identity check. Property Shield compares that information with ownership records and checks for potential warning signs.
  3. Review the report. You receive a risk score and any flags Property Shield identifies, giving you more information to decide how to proceed.

This extra step can be especially helpful when working with vacant land or out-of-state owners, which are frequent targets for seller impersonation.
