MetroTex Responds to Shelter-in-Place:  Association Seeks Clarification Related to Real Estate Practices

The MetroTex Association of REALTORS® urges all members to stay informed, follow the guidance of the CDC, and comply to the fullest with any State or County restrictions being implemented. During this unprecedented moment in time, the precautions being advised are crucial to keeping you, your family, and your clients safe, and slowing the spread of this fast moving virus.

MetroTex is working with Texas REALTORS® and local county officials to get clarification on Dallas County’s announcement on Sunday that it has issued a “Shelter-in-Place” Order. Effective at 11:59 tonight, Dallas County has restricted movement outside the home to activities it deemed non-essential. Real estate showings, inspections, open houses and client meetings that require face-to-face interaction were not listed as essential.

Surrounding counties – Collin, Denton and Tarrant – have not issued similar restrictions as of this morning.

MetroTex has contacted officials in Dallas County to help determine what interactions related to real estate are permissible. We also have contacted officials in surrounding counties to ask if they plan similar restrictions and will keep our members updated as we get more information.

“Our state association is working diligently with the Governor’s office to get clarification to real estate related businesses and if they are considered essential at this time,” 2020 MetroTex President Terry Tremaine. “Obviously we are in uncharted waters but we will all work through this and share information as soon as it becomes available.”

UPDATE 3/20/20
As we watch the news of the spread of COVID-19 throughout Texas, and listen to the day by day announcements for Dallas County, MetroTex has made the decision to have all staff provide customer service remotely.  Beginning on Monday, March 23rd, through Friday, April 3rd, MetroTex locations will be closed and staff will work remotely.  On or before April 3rd, we’ll determine the risks at that time, and determine next steps. While not an easy decision we felt it is the right decision to ensure the health and safety of our staff and members, and do our part to stop the spread of this virus.

We are STILL here for you!

Although MetroTex offices will be closed, and our store access will not be available, we will continue to strive to deliver the high quality of service that you are accustom to, during this trying time.  Led by our IT department, our staff has worked diligently over the past few days to prepare to work remotely should the time come for such a decision, and we’re up for the task.  During regular work hours, we are available via phone, email, conference call, virtual meetings, and online classes.

Your patience is appreciated during this time as we are all in uncharted waters.  Each and every staff member is doing their best to support you and provide a terrific member experience, yet we will be at the mercy of technology.

UPDATE 3/13/20

To protect the health and safety of MetroTex members, staff and visitors to our Dallas facility and five satellite offices during the Covid-19 outbreak, MetroTex has made the difficult decision to cancel all upcoming courses and events from now until April 30. This includes in-person new-member orientation, continuing education classes, designation courses and area MLS meetings. This also includes offsite events such as area workshops and TREPAC events. MetroTex will continue to monitor the situation through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The Board of Directors will also consider advice from Dallas County and surrounding municipalities before deciding to open in-person courses and our facilities. In light of the Governor’s address this afternoon, MetroTex joins in to support social distancing protocols, and putting in place new procedures to limit the potential spread of the virus. The situation will be evaluated again on or before April 30th. Committee meetings will remain on the calendar as scheduled, but will be accessed only by conference call. No in-person meetings of our committees, work groups or the Board of Directors will be held. Thank you for your understanding. Please be safe, and we look forward to serving you at full capacity when the CDC determines the time is appropriate.


  1. Although our offices are closed to the public at this time, we remain fully staffed and will respond to emails, phone calls, and pre-arranged store orders, to continue the same great service as much as possible
  2. Although we will not be open to the public, our committees will still be meeting electronically, so please check our Class and Event Calendar for information on how to access the meeting(s) you wish to participate in!
  3. If you still need to trade in your dKey, please know that the dKey retirement has been postponed until June 30.
  4. New Member Orientations will be done virtually, and information will be sent out directly to those who have registered for the “in-person” class.
  5. If you wish to purchase an item from one of our REALTOR® Stores, or a new lock box, please contact the location directly and we will work with you to get you the items you need!
